Departments are the main dimension the dashboard slices by. Getting them right matters more than getting them perfect — you can always rename, merge, or split later without losing history.
The rule of thumb
Five to twelve departments is usually the sweet spot. Below five, the slices are too coarse to be interesting. Above twelve, small departments fall under the 5-response anonymity threshold and blank out.
Create and edit
- 1Dashboard → Employees → Departments.
- 2Click New department. Enter a name and pick a colour. Colours are persisted across charts.
- 3Drag employees in from the All employees tab, or bulk-assign using the CSV import.
Nested teams
We keep departments flat on purpose. If you need sub-teams (e.g. 'Engineering → Platform'), use a naming convention instead — 'Eng · Platform', 'Eng · Product'. This avoids a nested tree that would be hard to read on a dashboard.
Don't create a 'Leadership' department just for the leadership team. With 3–4 people it will always be below the anonymity threshold and show nothing useful. Fold them into their functional departments instead.
